Things to Consider When Thinking About Getting Liposuction

The best candidates for liposuction are healthy people at or near their ideal body weight but still have a resistant pocket of fat. For example, a woman 5' 7" tall and weighs about 135 pounds that has bulges of fat on her outer thighs (saddle bags) could be an ideal candidate for liposuction.

Liposuction is a poor choice for weight loss. Even the most aggressive forms of liposuction will only remove about 5-6 pounds of fat. Furthermore, if you overeat after the liposuction, you will most likely regain the fat in a different location.

There are several different types of Liposuction. The original procedure was done under general anesthetic and used a large suction tube to remove the fat. The recovery was painful and frequently there was a lot of loose skin that needed removal at a later date. Next came tumescent liposuction which used water combined with local anesthetic to avoid the need for general anesthetic. Better, but still no skin tightening.

The next improvement came by trying to heat the water to help melt the fat before removing the fat. Both ultrasound and lasers were used to generate the heat. The heat made a big difference, we finally got improved skin tightening. The problem was that the hot water heated everything... fat, muscles, nerves, arteries, veins skin etc. What was really need was a way to selectively heat the fat and selectively heat the skin while minimizing the heat applied to everything else.

In 2009, the first device that could selectively melt fat and tighten skin was produced. It was called the SlimLipo by Palomar Medical. This laser was a major breakthrough for liposuction. The device combined 2 lasers into one machine that could be used to just melt fat, or just tighten skin or do both at the same time. For the first time, doctors could offer patients a way of melting fat and tightening skin that was safe and so effective that many patients did not need any followup skin tightening procedures.

Before the procedure, you should obtain and try on a compression garment. You will need to wear that garment day and night for at least a few weeks to help prevent swelling that is common after liposuction. The Marena Group makes garments that are very comfortable. They can be left on even while taking a shower or using the bathroom and they cause little to no skin irritation or odor. You should probably order 2 of them so you can put on a clean garment every day.

Arrange for transportation to take you home after the procedure. Even though you will probably be able to drive, you might be groggy. Having a driver is just plain smart.

After the procedure, plan on doing very little for about 2-3 days, and nothing strenuous for about 2 weeks. This will minimize swelling and speed your recovery.

Ask your doctor what kind of device(s) he uses and why he chose them. SlimLipo lasers do cost more, but they are well worth the extra expense due to the safety and results. Ask about anesthesia. Local anesthesia can be painless and speed up your recovery. Serious complications are usually from general anesthesia and less likely from the Liposuction.
